When I started our residential lighting business in 2007, I was enrolled in a business class at the UVA Darden School of Business. This class was primarily for those who were considering opening their own business, but I happened to have already begun ours. I felt the professor was most discouraging and think he may have frightened some of the talented students who had much to offer along with a great product, into avoiding their dreams. I did learn much from the professor but refused to be intimidated.
One important take away from that class was the importance of a “Mission Statement”. According to Google, a mission statement is a formal summary of the aims and values of a company. It is a statement to explain in simple terms, its purpose for being and why it exists and to express its overall goal.
We display our Mission Statement on our website and in the showroom. It says:
“Our mission at Nancy B’s House of Lights is to provide our customers the very finest in lighting products along with exceptional customer service. Our full-service lighting showroom offers value and selection. We accomplish our mission of service through integrity, training, preparation, and a complete dedication to customer satisfaction.”
We stand firm and dedicated to this statement!
Caring for our customers comes natural to us. Being in the “people business” has proven and continues to be most rewarding. Having an opportunity to say “thank you” means much to us. We all are experiencing strange and difficult times right now, but those two little words often put a smile on someone’s face.
