Wow! So many exciting new fixtures seen at Market this year. Lots of mixed metals, with gold and black being the most popular. New materials like faux rock crystal, Capiz shells, fluted glass and acrylics are being seen in lighting fixtures and fans.

We see the most changes with ceiling fans. What we used to call Fandeliers (fans with small chandeliers), is now called Fandelights. These fans are encased in decorative cages. Fans were never considered statement pieces because the designs were not distinct but now there are endless opportunities for style along with functionality.

There have been changes in the fan blade structure, technology, and the ability to turn on your fan through a phone app or voice control. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth have been game-changers. But look up; today’s fans are also more stylish, you can select blade sizes, pitch, finish, light source, and style.

One of the biggest motivations for fan design change has been the changes of the motor. Original ceiling fans had a 12-inch AC motor but now the DC motors, which are more quiet and energy efficient, have taken over. Some motors are small enough to fit in your hand and have allowed the manufacturers to streamline design.

The DC motor (direct current) uses less electrical current by utilizing powerful magnets of opposite polarity. These magnets create an internal magnetic force that works to rotate the motor resulting in significant energy savings. There is no sacrifice to air movement by going to the smaller motor.
